Nowadays, solar energy technologies have become big business for the industry. What has started as a forte market is now quickly altering into a worldwide movement. The manufacturers of solar products are hardly keeping up with the demand as homeowners. Businesses are starting to realize the major effect of electricity produced in-house, may have in the long run. There was so much of a demand that there was even talk of a silicon crunch, as makers in the U.S., Europe and Asia manufactured as many panels they possible could.

The History of Solar Power Technologies

Just like in other industries, solar power technologies are changing and the panels today are nothing like they were last year. There is less use of silicon, with others being more efficient, thinner and even flexible in some cases. This has not always been that way.

When the solar industry first began, it started with rigid panels which had to be set up after a building was constructed. Those were the first generation solar heating systems that were made of either monocrystalline or polycrystalline. Nowadays, we normally see the latest version of them on roofs. Then came the thin film cells which were made much thinner, used less materials and easier to make; although this was the case, they were still rigid.

Nowadays there are new types of solar energy technologies. There are a few companies making flexible thin film models on basis of Copper-Indium-Diselenid technology.

Many manufacturers are using this technology to make products which can be easily integrated right into a certain construction product known as building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).
