Is it possible to build your own wind turbine? The shortest answer available to such a question is "yes". For a small amount of time and money almost anyone could purchase the materials needed to capture energy from the air, but the big question is the amount of energy created by a consumer-built turbine. Generally, it is best to turn to professionals with modern knowledge and systems in order to get a safe and reliable system for home or business use.

While there are some who can create small scale wind power installations for their garden, farm, or even a portion of their property, it tends to require much more powerful equipment to be successful.

First, however, before even considering whether or not to build your own wind turbine, you will have to assess the site for viability. It is vitally important to remember that a consistent ten MPH wind must be present in order to create a workable supply of power. Many people who find that they don't get a strong enough level of breeze will also opt to install a few solar panels too, but generally, it is advisable to move forward with a turbine only if there is enough raw material – or wind.

What is needed for a small scale wind power installation, apart from this supply of wind, is also approval from local building or planning committees. Millions of people in rural and urban areas are deeply frustrated by the fact that they test their site for adequate wind only to find that they don't have enough room or acreage to receive approval for a turbine. This means that the second part of the process is to ensure that you will be able to move forward with the plan should there be enough wind.

Once these two major hurtles are overcome, the builder/owner will need to understand the basic components of the system which include the tower, blades, the turbine or generator, the mounting that allows the entire structure to move into the wind, and a bank of batteries to store the electricity created. This is usually a surprising list that many people are unaware of until they begin planning their own system. For instance, many people don't realize that a tower is mandatory or that they will have to find the room or space in their home for the bank of batteries. Many also don't understand that the use of "net metering" may mean that they will have to remain connected to the public grid if they want the financial benefits too.

What all of this adds up to is quite simple – it is entirely possible to build a turbine for home electrical supplies, but it does take research, patience and planning to do so.
