Solar cells are made up of semiconductor materials such as: silicon, gallium, cadmium telluride and copper indium diselenide. One of the most common materials used in solar cells is silicon.</p><p>In the case of crystalline silicon solar cells, substantially pure silicon with high crystal quality is needed to make strong usable solar cells. In the outer shell of a silicon atom it comprises of 4 bonding electrons. In order to form a stable electron configuration, in the crystal lattice two electrons of neighbouring atoms from an electron pair bond. By forming a stable bond with 4 neighbouring electrons silicon achieves its noble gas configuration with 8 out electrons. This electron bond can be broken by light or heat, which enables the electron to move freely and as a result it leaves a hole in the crystal lattice. This is known as intrinsic conductivity.</p><p>Intrinsic conductivity cannot be used to produce electricity. The silicon can only produce electricity when impurities (known as doping atoms) are introduced into the crystal lattice. These atoms have one electron more (phosphorous) or one electron less (boron) than silicon in their outer shell. The phosphorous doping method is known as negative doping (n-doping) and the boron doping method is known as positive doping (p-doping).</p><p>In the case of n-doping the electron can move about freely in the crystal and as a result can transport electrical charge. On the other hand p-doping has a missing bonding electron for every bonding born atom in the crystal lattice. This enables electrons from silicon atoms to fill the hole caused by the missing bonding electron, creating a new hole elsewhere. The conduction method based on these doping atoms is known impurity conduction.</p><p>If both the p and n-doped semiconductor layers are brought together a p-n junction is made. This junction allows surplus electrons from the n-semiconductor to diffuse into the p-semiconductor layer, thus creating an area known as the space charge region. Positively charged doping atoms remain in the n-region of the transition and negatively charged doping atoms remain in the p-region of the transition. An electrical field is then created that is opposed to the movement of the charge carriers, with the result that diffusion does not continue indefinitely. This p-n semiconductor is what is known as a solar cell. Once the solar cell is exposed to light photons are absorbed by the electrons. This contribution of energy breaks electron bonds. The released electrons are pulled through the electrical field into the n-region. The holes that are formed migrate in the opposite direction, into the p-region. While alternate energy sources are available in plenty, all we have to do is find ways of harnessing them effectively. Sun is present everywhere, and hence, Solar Power is there for taking. By understanding what is involved in making your own Solar Power Generator, it becomes easy to get free power.</p><p>Its first necessary to understand how our homes are powered now. The power supply that comes through the grid is the primary source of power. Its AC &#8211; Alternating Current &#8211; and the appliances that we use are also built to work with AC. Hence, it is required to produce AC power through the Solar Power Generator that we build.</p><p>The primary component of Solar Power Generator is the Solar Panel, which is nothing but an array of Solar Cells. These Solar Cells are the building blocks of the system that would help us get free power. The Solar Panels can be bought or assembled. I&#8217;d recommend assembling one, as it turns out to be much cheaper than buying one.</p><p>It is important to note that the output of Solar Cells is DC &#8211; Direct current. Remember, our appliances work with AC. Hence, this DC needs to be converted to AC to power them. An inverter is used for this purpose. The Solar Panel&#8217;s DC output is converted by the inverter into AC and this can be then passed on to the grid or to the appliances directly.</p><p>One question that you probably have is &#8211; What if there is not sunlight around? What about nights and cloudy days? &#8211; A battery helps resolve this. A battery can be used to store the DC from Solar Panels during day time. This battery can serve the DC load to the inverter during the night times or other times when there is no Sun. This way, we can ensure uninterrupted supply to get free power to our home.</p><p>So, to summarize, one needs to:</p><p>1. Buy/Assemble Solar Panel</p><p>2. Give Solar Panel&#8217;s output DC load to battery</p><p>3. Connect the battery to an inverter</p><p>4. Connect the inverter to the grid or the appliances directly</p><p><p>This can be a fun DIY project to do &#8211; At least I had fun doing this. When light strikes this substance, the semiconductor takes in some of the energy.<br/><br/>The incoming energy is enough to push some electrons loose. These free-floating electrons flow in the same direction in the semiconductor. This produces an electrical current. The next step is to use contacts that have been placed on the photovoltaic cells and run a circuit from the top contacts, through the item to be powered, and back to the bottom contacts.<br/><br/>The silicon is, surprisingly, impure. This is because silicon in its natural crystalline state does not allow for much movement of electrons. Each of the silicon atoms is unstable on its own because there are four places for electrons that can be filled. Yet, every silicon atom is usually locked up with the other silicon atoms by sharing electrons on the outer valance.<br/><br/>In order to make the silicon material more conductive, it is necessary to dope it, or mix in some other substance. To make N-type silicon, phosphorous is used. It has five electrons in its outer ring, so that when it mates up with the silicon atoms surrounding it, there is one free electron for every phosphorous atom.<br/><br/>P-type silicon is made by doping with boron. It has only three electrons in its outer shell. This leaves a hole, which is a place where an electron can jump in, for every atom of boron. The key to using silicon in photovoltaic cells is to use both P-type and N-type silicon.<br/><br/>The two types of silicon are set up side by side. At first, the electrons and holes near the shared border fill in rapidly. Then, equilibrium is reached where the electrons can no longer interact in that way.<br/><br/>An electric field is created separating the two halves. In this field, it is easy for electrons to flow from the P-side to the N-side. Electrons on the N-side cannot make it over to the P-side. This creates a one-way flow of electrons.<br/><br/>Photons are units of energy from the sun. Photons keep the energy flowing by bumping into the atoms of the solar cell and freeing electrons and holes. This perpetuates the movement of electrons from hole to hole and establishes current. The field created at the site of the N-type and P-type silicon junction makes the voltage that completes the power picture.<br/><br/>Using photovoltaic cells to harness the sun&#8217;s energy is still fairly new. The cells are being used in more and more applications, both commercial and residential.
